Violent video games are cause of aggressive behavior in children

Assignment 4 of 4

Violent video games are cause of aggressive behavior in children.

Pain point:
What are the negative effects of violent video games in children?
Five-day journal
Day1 Annoyed: Woke up on Saturday, found my younger brother playing his video game as usual on weekends. Upon my request to let me play for a while, he shouted at me to go away.
Day2 Confused: I was playing the video game, my brother came in complaining he was going to play, when I refused to let him play, he got really angry. Anyhow, I gave it back to him.
Day3 Concerned: I noticed how his behavior had begun to change after he started playing the violent video games. It made me more concerned about the video games.
Day4 Shocked: All the aunts and cousins were gathered at our place for family dinner, and the younger ones were playing around together. Just after a while we heard someone fighting, When we went there to see what had happened, my brother was starting to wrestle with one of the cousin about his age.
Day5 Worried: When I discussed about the violent games with my family, all of them agreed with the fact how my younger brother had become more aggressive since he started playing the games.

Target Group:
Children aged between 5 to 18 years old are mostly involved in playing video games. Although people of any age can have the hobby to play but the change in behavior is particularly seen in children of young ages. "Children who see a lot of violence are more likely to view violence as effective way of settling a a conflict" (Anderson,2007). Anderson also adds, "Video game violence feeds an perception that the world is a violent and mean place. Viewing violence increases behaviors of becoming a victim of violence" (2007). The parents usually do not realize the effects of these video games, neither do they focus on the types of games their children play.
While some game involve, educational and useful content, there are also a large number of video games related to murdering, abuse, criminal behavior, sexual abuse, foul language and disrespect, First person shooter games and other violent video games, such as Call of duty and Fry cry were among the top 20 best-selling video games in 2013(Entertainment Software Association,2013). In one of the school shootings, which occurred at Sandy hook elementary in Newton, Connecticut, the shooter Adam Lanza was reported to be a frequent video game player. Some of the video games found at his house included Grand theft auto, Call of duty, Left 4 dead, Dance dance revolution and Kingdom hearts (Good, 2013a), The most notable game that was found was called School shooter: North American Tour 2012, which was about what was actually done by Adam Lanza. The player enters into a school, shoots and kills all of the students and teachers and then is forced to commit suicide to avoid being caught by the law enforcement (Good,2013b) This shows how important it is to encourage the prevention of such video games.
Piepenbrinkalso (2005), specifically states, "The object of the most block buster video games is to kill people---with blood and chunks of bodies flying in different directions. Eventually those images become less shocking and result in lack of empathy for human suffering and death." This statement explains how people become immune to violence and the how it effect them in the real life.

Pain point:
Video games have become more horrific and bloodier. With the rise and influence of technology, video games are one of the most popular areas of interest for the consumers. However, many of these games containing violent and deadly elements in them leads to devasting effect on many children.
According to most of the research it has a very negative effect on the children and many experimental and non-experimental studies with males and females lead to this conclusion. About 50% of the young children play these violent video games. It has also been found out that on average the young girls play the video games for about an hour per day while the boys play for two hours. Over the years, technology has improved in number of ways becoming more realistic and easier. This has also made the games to become more live like and therefore attracting the young generation in large number. Most of these included battles between two players and killing the enemy and this led to more games involving murder and then finally making the games violent and abusive enough to badly influence the behavior in children.
Not only it affects the behavior of children but also make them lazy and less interested in reading and social activities. They prefer to play games rather than go out and make friends. This leads to addiction of video games and almost all the children get addicted to video games at some stage which is the main cause of lower grades and failure to participate in other important activities.

Strategic Solution:
The best possible solution to this problem is that, these children who are extremely addicted to playing the violent video games and do not seem to be able to get over their addiction must be taught about the negative aspects. They must be told about the horrible incidents in which people were driven to murder their enemies after getting so much involved in violence and getting used to the blood and all.
Despite the prohibition of letting their children buy the violent games, parents must give more serious attention toward their children activities. Once the children get addicted and involved in to the video games it is very difficult to change their habit and in most cases, children do not stop playing since there is a huge variety in these games. Once they get bored of playing games, it does not take them long to find a new and more interesting game. Therefore, parents should not allow their children to play any of these games at preschool age.
Moreover, when they allow the kids to play these games, they must set a limited time for them to play, and put a password to prevent them from playing when alone. Parents should try to give more time to their children and play the games with them in order, to experience themselves and share with their children what was right and wrong in the game. Also, they must be instructed to play in places such as living room or where everyone can view the game, not inside their bedroom and giving them complete privacy,
Furthermore, before purchasing any video game for the kids, parents must check the rating of the games and what it is about, the content of the game and the level of development. This can greatly help to reduce the changing behavior of the children and prevent the negative influence of games on the younger generation.

2-flyers test Result:
I showed the two flyers to my target group of children and asked which of the two flyers encouraged them the most. The target group was satisfied with both the flyers, saying that both had something to be concerned about. However, the children who were specifically into playing the violent games agreed to be encouraged more by the second flyer with the heading, “Wondering why you have been aggressive lately”
The children said it was more realistic and thoughtful for them. After seeing the second flyer, it gave the children an insight about the effects of playing these video games that are based on crimes, murders and wars. They realized they actually have been aggressive some of the times unusually and wondered afterward, why they behaved in such way. The children seemed concerned and alert, after going through the flyer thinking about how their behavior has changed after they started playing these video games.

After the research on this topic, I found out that this project would cost nearly 1000 dollars. The outcomes of the project seemed to be very meaningful and worthy. "The negative effect of violent video games" is the topic that I came up with and concluded the project with the above findings. This problem was something that I had observed at my home that how my younger brother was behaving with all the violence he would see in the games. Being concerned about the problem, I came up with a fabulous idea and decided to implement it, by doing research as part of my course, After selecting the target group of children I realized how to come up with the solutions.
I had first decided to interview the parents and target the parents as my target group. But later I realized that the parents would not be able to give me the insight of the experiences that the children go through. Also involving the parents seemed a bad idea to me, since it could have caused the children to feel that they were being over protected and that we may have appeared a bit too nosy to the children to interfere in their issues. Therefore, I switched my target group to the children and questioned them about their experiences and observations about the video games.
This helped me to look through the problem more deeply and also, became a source of entertainment for me and the children as well. The children felt valued and understood the issues related to the violent video games. Instead of making the parents to impose certain restrictions on the children regarding their video games, I managed to made the children realize its harmful effects by sharing some real life stories about how some people had attempted murders easily after becoming too used too to the violence and blood in the video games. This encouraged the children to change their habits and direct their interest in useful game contents.
